Paddle Discover Award
For beginners over a 5 week period in Kayak. If you're new to paddling, or just attended a couple of taster sessions then this is where you start. Once you have your Discover award under your belt you can move on to Explore course next year. Whilst Paddle discover is a beginner course you must be ready to work hard and pay close attention to the coaches. As a new paddler you'll need to gain experience and must be prepared for the challenge. Paddle sports are classed as an adventurous activity and not without risk so you must be prepared to listen carefully to coach's instructions. Don't be surprised when they shout out your name if they spot you heading for the rapids! Paddle Discover is £55 for 5 weeks tuition and equipment. We run two courses in the year:
APPLY FOR THE DISCOVER COURSE HERE Courses run on Tuesday evening, be there for 6pm, on the water by 6.30 and usually off at 8pm. Paddle Explore Award Done the Discover course? Next you can develop your skills in kayak, paddle more efficiently, go on journeys, learn to rescue yourself and others in a kayak and canoe. This course runs all summer term inclusive of school holidays (we don't expect you to make every evening, holidays are allowed) so we also have time to try out canoeing and maybe SUPs. We finish with a full day expedition on a weekend. Paddle Explore is £95 for approximately 22 weeks tuition and equipment as for Paddle Discover plus a spraydeck for the course. £75 will be charged for the 22 weeks if you have ALL your own equipment, including boat. This is Kayak only and aimed at getting you ready for moving water. It usually takes two years to attain this award, and at the end of the first year you'll get the chance to kayak on moving water in Dartmore. What to wear
Clothes to get wet in (you will get wet):
Wet suit if you have one, otherwise light weight sports clothes that don’t hold the water. Synthetic fabrics are better than cotton. If it’s cold, wear a couple of layers.
Windproof top- a cagoule is ideal, the hood should be removed or folded away.
Swim shoes or old trainers/plimsolls. Crocs and flip flops fall off so are not suitable on the water but are great for when you get changed to go home.
Changing rooms and toilet are available on site.
What to bring
If you need to wear glasses on the water, bring a strap which attaches to the earpieces to stop them falling off.
If you take regular medication/inhaler please remember to bring it with you and let your coach know. Also let them know if you’ve forgotten it. They can carry it in a dry bag so it is available for your use if necessary.
Bring a towel and full change of clothing (including underwear and shoes) for going home in.
Bring a hot drink and snack, paddling uses energy and is hungry work.
When you’ve finished
Wash your hands before eating.
Weil’s disease – there is a very small risk of contracting Weil’s disease (and other illnesses) from being in the river. It is important to make sure you wash/shower after being in the river before eating. Guidance can be found at nhs.uk/conditions/leptospirosis/
If you do happen to get ill after a session, please do let us know so we can record this.
